So the kids are back in school, now what? If you’re a freelancer, it might mean that the time has come to add a few projects to your workload.

While you might be ready to add to your workload, the load won’t start piling in until you’ve gotten the word out that you’re currently looking for some new clients. To get started you only need to look as far as your social networking profiles. Let everyone know you have an opening or two available for new clients. If the people following you don’t need your services, maybe they will forward your information to someone who does. It doesn’t hurt to announce.

Once you’ve announced your intent, take a good look at your website. Does it need a little sprucing up? While you should regularly care for your website so you can make the most of it (and hopefully turn some of those onlookers into clients), it doesn’t hurt to take an extra critical look at your site to make sure it is up to par with your current needs.

If waiting for work to come to you is not something you enjoy (who does?), you can make the most of your extra time to seek out work instead. Websites like oDesk and Elance can help you seek out projects that fit within your area of expertise.

Of course we’ve all got to start somewhere and if you are new to the freelance world, a little free work can help you get your feet wet. You earn a little experience, they get what they needed done, and if you ask there might also be a kind testimonial in it for you as well. References like these can help you get your start.
