Study shows women make up more than a quarter of business owners

In a move that might further separate the mom from the pop in small business, more women than ever before are launching their own businesses.

A report that was released last month by The Center for Women’s Business Research has confirmed what many women business owners have already believed, that they are a growing piece in the business puzzle. According to an article at The New York Times, 28 percent of all businesses are run by women, while 16 percent of them have created or helped sustain jobs.

So what does that mean for the woman entrepreneur of today? Not much, for now.

Gwen Martin, the executive director for the Center for Women’s Business Research, plans to take the information they’ve gathered to Capitol Hill. By approaching the Obama administration, the Small Business Association, as well as House and Senate small business committee members, Martin hopes to persuade them into offering more resources and programs specifically for women entrepreneurs.

Until then, the study still provides hope to all of the women in or starting a business. The more of them there are, the louder their voice will get.
